The Greene County Rams lost both games when they hosted the Winterset Huskies for non-conference basketball Jan.14.
The girls lost their 12th game of the season to extend their two-season losing streak to 20. Their last win was Jan. 12, 2018, a 55-49 win over Saydel. The Rams averaged 35.5 points in the 2017-18 season.
This season, under first year head coach Tyler Westhoff, the Rams average 21 points. They scored 20 points Monday while the Huskies scored 55.
The Rams were down 20-5 after one quarter and 28-11 at halftime. They avoided a continuous clock in the third quarter, scoring four points to the Huskies’ 16; the score was 44-15 at the end of the quarter, with a 35-point differential triggering the continuous clock.
Ram junior Izzy Bravard scored eight points, six from the free throw line, to lead the Rams. She also led in total rebounds with six. Junior Bailey Cunningham scored six points, including the Rams’ only 3-point basket for the game. She was the lone Ram to foul out of the game. Junior Luisa Slompo, sophomore Brianna Osterson and freshman Brianna Habben scored two points each. The Rams shot at a meager 15.6 percent from the floor. They made nine of 20 free throws for 45 percent, ahead of their season average from the line.
Winterset senior Madison Wauters scored 21 points for the game, one point more than the entire Ram team. The Huskies improved their record to 7-6 with the win.
The Ram boys were also outpaced by the Huskies, losing 85-53. The Rams were down 22-16afterone quarter. The put up only 11 points in the second quarter as the visitors racked up 20, and the third quarter was even worse. The Rams again garnered 11 points to the Huskies’ 28 points. After three quarters the Rams were down 70-38.
Trey Hinote, the only senior on the team, led in scoring with 19 points. He is known as a tough 3-point shooter, but against the Huskies he made only four of 15 tres. Junior Nick Breon scored 15 points, a season high for him. He made four of five shots from 3-point range. Junior Carter Morton made nine points, six points below his season average. Sophomore Zach Goff made four points, and juniors Xavier Haye, John Rosado and Logan Kinsey added two points each. Morton led in rebounds with nine, followed by junior Cael Fisher with six.
The Rams fell to 5-8 while the Huskies improved to 7-4.
